The European Union warns the United States of new sanctions against Russia

Image
(CNN) - The European Union has issued a harsh warning to the United States over a plan to impose new sanctions on Russia , opening up the prospect of a gap between the two allies over how to deal with Moscow's alleged meddling in elections. European Union President Jean Claude Juncker said the bloc could act "in a matter of days" if it does not receive assurances of the potential impact of the new sanctions on European interests. Russia also reacted angrily saying that the sanctions passed by the US House of Representatives could worsen the already deteriorating relations between the two countries. The proposal calls for new measures against Russia, North Korea and Iran, and limits any efforts by the White House to weaken such sanctions. But the European Union fears that sanctions could hit companies that are involved in funding a new and controversial pipeline, Nord Steam 2, which would carry gas from Russia to Germany. Juncker said the law could have "

A total of 176 demonstrators are in custody, according to official figures. Others have already been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. UK’s first public autonomous taxi trial to begin soon

Image
By Matt Reynolds STEP into a taxi in south London later this year and you might not have to think about paying a tip. The UK’s first fully public trial of autonomous vehicles will soon be under way. For four weeks, a fleet of driverless shuttles will each ferry up to five passengers and a “safety warden” along a 2-kilometre route in Greenwich. Previous trials there and in the town of Milton Keynes required participants to register in advance. This time the vehicles will pick up anyone wanting a ride. The four-stop route will connect a hotel close to the O2 Arena concert venue with the Millennium Village housing development. En route, the shuttles will also call at a river-bus stop and a cable car terminal. Similar shuttles are already in use at London’s Heathrow airport, but are confined to a purpose-built area off limits to other traffic. In Greenwich, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access the test route. The vehicles will lack conventional controls, although

Geely's Volvo to go all electric with new models from 2019

Image
By Niklas Pollard | STOCKHOLM All Volvo car models launched after 2019 will be electric or hybrids, the Chinese-owned company said on Wednesday, making it the first major traditional automaker to set a date for phasing out vehicles powered solely by the internal combustion engine. The Sweden-based company will continue to produce pure combustion-engine Volvos from models launched before that date, but its move signals the eventual end of nearly a century of Volvos powered solely that way. While electric and hybrid vehicles are still only a small fraction of new cars sales, they are gaining ground at the premium end of the market, where Volvo operates and where Elon Musk's Tesla Motors has been a pure-play battery carmaker from day one. As technology improves and prices fall, many in the industry expect mass-market adoption to follow. "This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car," Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson said. The compan
